Nofziger draws “a line in the sand” and urges renewed focus on environmental issues and water quality in sensitive recharge zones.

Austin, Texas Austin Mayoral candidate Max Nofziger said today that rapid urban growth in the Austin metropolitan area has placed so much pressure on the environment that it is time to “...draw a line in the sand.”  Speaking only a few yards from Barton Springs, which has been closed for the past several weeks due to concerns about the water quality, Mr. Nofziger echoed the famous legend of the Alamo and literally drew a line in the sand and urged all environmentalists to step across the line with him in defense of the area’s unique natural resources.

“We must take action now to save the many area water ways like Barton Springs.  Too many lip-service environmentalists have been content to simply sit and talk while our water and air become more threatened by pollution.  We need to stand united to protect our environment or the very essence of Austin could be lost.”

Nofziger talked about his lengthy record of leadership on environmental issues over the past 25 years and challenged his primary opponent, Will Wynn, to discuss what he plans to do to protect Barton Springs and other waterways.  “The pool has closed on his watch.  He has failed in his responsibility to protect it and keep it open for the public to enjoy.”  “We can’t afford lip-service environmentalists.  Just sitting and talking at a bunch of meetings doesn’t mean that you are actually doing anything to protect the environment.”

Nofziger completed his remarks by saying, “The growth boom of the late ‘90s has threatened our water and polluted our air.  This is it!  It is urgent that we act now because our window of opportunity is closing.  We must make a stand!”
